"It was my first time on a boat. I love Barrier
Islands Discovery Program!!!” Local High School Student
As stewards of the Noisette Creek Preserve, we are dedicated to teaching people how ecosystems work and how they benefit human health. We do this by providing education, research, restoration and recreation opportunities for North Charleston students and residents. By collaborating with leading academic and research institutions, Michaux Conservancy provides quality programs for the local community.
What we do
At the Michaux Center for Urban and Coastal Ecosystems our focus is two-fold:
- Restoring the 135-acre Noisette Creek Preserve, and creating a more "walkable" North Charleston by linking sidewalks to trails
- Creating an outdoor classroom and research laboratory for the public and students in our targeted schools (14 public schools in a 2-mile radius of Noisette Creek)
- We provide "hands-on" experiences for students in natural sciences, including tidal creek, river and ocean environments. With our partners, we have conducted estuarine and marine learning experiences, and creek clean up/learning events for local students. We are a resource for numerous related professions and host workshops in land use, environmental best practices, native plants and invasive species, and stormwater education. In partnership with the City of North Charleston, we are currently working on a restoration plan for the Noisette Creek Preserve.
