Community mentors gather for "Building the Bond" Workshop
04/26/2007
Vanessa Gilliard accepts a Certificate of Appreciation for her leadership at Mary Ford Elementary Lunch Buddies program
The Noisette Foundation, along with the Mayor's Office for Children, Youth and Families hosted a "Building the Bond" workshop for community mentors on Thursday, April 26, 2007 at the Navy Yard's 10 Storehouse Row. Volunteers with the Charleston schools' Lunch Buddies program, the Lowcountry Civic Justice Corps, and other programs were invited to learn tips for "breaking the ice", ways to build a healthy bond with their mentees, and suggestions for youth activities. Mentors received a "Building the Bond" Mentoring Handbook which elaborates on these topics and more, making this handbook a valuable references for mentors.
The workshop was conducted by long-time mentor and community volunteer, Sandy Scott. Ms. Scott, a Kiwanis of Charleston board member and Service Project co-chair, has had years of mentoring experience with the Lunch Buddies program, SMART (Start Making A Reader Today), and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Ms. Scott was not only informative but entertaining as well, making the workshop a great educational experience.
A Certificate of Appreciation was given to Vanessa Gilliard of Mary Ford Elementary for her commitment to their Lunch Buddies program. With the help of Ms. Gilliard, Mary Ford's Lunch Buddies program is growing fast and is placing more and more children with adult mentors from the community. Lunch Buddies connects an adult mentor with a student at Mary Ford or Chicora Elementary. Mentors visit their mentee during the lunch hour at least twice a month. After having lunch together, Lunch Buddies gather for creative activities and fellowship. Lunch Buddies is a simple way to make a giant impact in the life of a child who may not have a positive role model at home.
A warm "Thank you" to Carolyn Brown, Sandy Scott, Krenston Price, Bria D'Amico, and the mentors for everything you have done to bring our community together to invest in the next generation.
