Noisette Creek Day inspires service learning in students

What is better than an outdoor classroom?

The Noisette Creek flows through the Navy Yard a little healthier today thanks to local students. In the past few years, the Michaux Conservancy has been the steward for the Noisette Creek Preserve. With the help of The Center for Urban Coastal Ecosystems, the Michaux Conservancy aspires to reconnect our community with nature by using the Noisette Creek as an outdoor classroom and research laboratory. The Academic Magnet High School and Lowcountry Earth Force have helped make this vision a reality by organizing the Noisette Creek Day. Juniors and Seniors attended the Third Annual Creek Day on May 18 this year. The Noisette Company's co-founder, John Knott offered kind words to kick off the event and later, LEEP (Lowcountry Environmental Education Programs) provided a lunch demonstration. Throughout the day students were treated to classes about bird watching with Audubon South Carolina, GPS instruction from NOAA Coastal Services Center, and discussed plant species with a College of Charleston, Masters of Environmental Studies student. Equipped with all this knowledge, students spent the rest of the day cleaning up trash from around the Noisette Creek, helping her natural beauty to shine!
