We’re South Carolina’s award-winning leader in Sustainability, building the capacity in residents, businesses, and building professionals to create more energy-efficient, healthy and environmentally responsible homes and communities. Through our partnerships with local governments, companies, non-profits, and dozens of neighborhood associations, we’re making a tangible difference throughout the Lowcountry and beyond.

What we do
Our programs include: Education, Outreach and Training, and Services.

GreenHouse Demonstration Facility showcases the sustainable renovation of a typical lowcountry home – thousands of visitors have toured the home since 2003

Energy Audits for Homes & Businesses – transforming local buildings into sustainable examples through performance testing and energy use analysis

Free Workshops for homeowners focused on energy conservation, sustainable home renovation, and indoor air quality - WE’VE SAVED OVER $475,300 in energy bills!

Green Builders Professionals Series - helping builders, architects, construction teams and others with technical training

The Green Cities Initiative builds the capacity of local governments, businesses and organizations to work together to develop sustainable municipal strategies and to advance high-performance schools in South Carolina.
In cooperation with local partners, we provide free, in-home weatherization services to low income residents in North Charleston.

 

Results & Achievements

As the “go-to” resource for information on sustainable practices, we have had a significant impact. Some key facts:

  • Over 2200 residents have received training on upgrading their
    homes to improve health, durability & energy efficiency at our
    free monthly workshops
  • Over 250 workshops for various audiences have been conducted
    on energy conservation, indoor air quality, sustainable home
    repairs and gardening
  • Over 40 training sessions on sustainable building and related
    topics have been held for builders, architects, interior designers
    and remodelers
  • We’ve produced 2 important on-line resources:
    www.sustainabilityinstitutesc.org and
    www.scgreenbuildingdirectory.org, a searchable database of
    green materials manufactured within 500 miles of our state
    border and green services provided within the state
  • We’re a Founding Member of the SC Chapter of the US Green
    Building Council that promotes the LEEDTM Rating System for
    buildings
